New Delhi : The Reserve Bank on Saturday announced extension to last date for exchanging ₹ 2000 banknotes as 9 October in place of its prior deadline that expires today. The banks were earlier advised to provide either deposit or exchange facility for ₹ 2000 notes till 30 September.
Those who do not have a bank account can exchange ₹ 2000 notes with any bank without ID proof, the maximum of such exchange being Rs 20,000 at a time.
The RBI also informed that, of the Rs 3.56 lakh crore in circulation as on 19 May, it has so far received Rs 3.42 lakh crore worth of ₹ 2000 notes, meaning only Rs 0.14 lakh crore worth of for ₹ 2000 notes remain in circulation as on 29 September.
After demonetisation on 8 November 2016, RBI introduced ₹ 2000 notes, the printing of which was halted in 2018 -19. Most of these notes were printed before March of 2017.
