THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The world of sports and 195 families are excited and extremely thankful to the govt and Department of Sports for acknowledging them, via appointments in the govt machinery.
195 posts were created in government service recently to absorb meritorious sportspersons including Ranjit Trophy stars. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will hand over the appointment orders pertaining to them, in a ceremony to be held at Central Stadium today, Thursday at 3 pm.
It is first time the State is making appointments in such massive numbers, at one go. The posts coming live now were kept pending during the tenure of the previous government (2010-2014).
The sports fraternity is absolutely joyful about the happening and social media is flooded with felicitations for the Department of Sports, Sports Minister EP Jayarajan and the State government. Commenters in large numbers indicate that the government gesture, apart from securing lives of sportspersons’ families, will also serve to inspire upcoming achievers.
With 195 sports persons coming into service, the total number of government appointments under current government climbs to 440.
11 stars of Santhosh Trophy fame left without job, were posted in the Education Department earlier. Also 58 were inducted into Law Enforcement. Appointment orders are being dispatched for 83 others, who formed part of teams that earned silver and bronze at national level.
Incidentally, only 110 meritorious sports persons were given appointments during last government’s tenure. 50 persons are to be inducted into service each year. Accordingly between 2010-14, rank lists were published for a total of 250 vacancies. Of them, hockey star PR Sreejesh was appointed against one of the vacancies and appointment to another slot is under consideration by High Court. There also existed instances of the same sports person featuring in more than one rank list whereby, the actual number of individuals listed stood reduced to 195.
Steps are being taken to ensure appointments due against each year are made without delay. To do this, the Selection Committee shall examine applications received against each pending year and prepare a fresh rank list.
