Thiruvananthapuram : There shall be a 20 percent increase in seats for Plus Two in Malabar and a 10 percent addition for other regions, said Education Minister V Sivankutty in the Assembly. There would be a total of 3,60,150 seats across the state and seat for all aspiring for higher studies has been ensured, said the minister in response to the Opposition’s adjournment motion on Tuesday.
Of the 4,21,887 students who appeared for SSLC exams of 2020-21, 4,19,653 passed out successfully. The pass percentage this time stood at 99.47 percent. There are 3,06,150 seats currently in aided schools at Plus I level averaging to 50 seats per division. However, according to statistics of past five years, 3,32,631 students seek admissions for higher secondary, meaning there arises a gap of 26,48. These have been made up for. There are also another 98,220 seats spread as 30,000 at vocational higher secondary schools, 49,140 seats at ITI institutes and 19,080 seats in polytech colleges
The current scenario is such,t there would be vacant seats left in all districts once the admissions at government and aided schools come to a close. No district in the state presently has demand that outruns seat capacity in its schools.
The number of A Plus scorers this time are higher than in past years. All students eligible for higher secondary and Plus I admissions shall be provided seat as per their choice option. Such admissions, subject to criterion, will serve to allay anxieties of parents regarding their wards’ admission.
Seats are up by 20 percent in schools from Palakkad to Kasaragod in Malabar region with 28,160 of additional seats. There are 2,24,312 SSLC pass outs in the Malabar region. The average for admissions in the past years has been 1,65,477.
There are a total of 1,40,800 seats in Malabar region at rate of 50 students per division. A rise by 20 percent will see 28,160 more seats now.
With additional seats in place, districts other than Malabar too will have sufficient seats to meet admission demands. Malappuram will have 2700 fewer seats, this because, SSLC passouts in Malappuram are less by 1816 compared to last year.
Also, there are 11,275 seats in aided schools. Put together, the seats strength should suffice demands for admission there. Even so, the situation there will be assessed and revieed as requiered in terms of admission and options sought, the minister said.
