34.05 Lakh Children In Public Schools; 42,059 New Admissions This Year For Class II -X: Min V Sivankutty

Thiruvananthpauram : There are 34.05 lakh children  who enrolled this year in government - aided schools alone, said Education Minister V Sivankutty. If no. of students from unaided be added ti tgusm the figure rises to 37.46 lakhs. The minister said, student admissions into 1st  standard reduced  year by 10,164 this year, however, there were 42,059 new additions to classes between II - X. The highest number of new enrolments were for class VIII, a total of 17,011. For class V, fresh admission numbers were 15,529.

 Last year, the total number of children in government-aided and unaided sectors was 38.33 lakh and the number for public schools was  8.33 lakh.  The figure last year for Class I admissions was 2.68 lakh and for Class II was 3.95 lakh.

Essentially, the statistics indicate this year fresh figures  are short of 1,27,539 if it were to exceed last year new admissions. Even so, 42,059 children have additionally joined classes 2 to 10.  Total no. of children who obtained admissions in 2022 -23 in govt and aided schools is 38,33,399.

The selection process took off this year with verification of Aadhaar of applicant students. Details of students schoolwise pertaining to admissions this year is available on portal (sametham.kite.kerala.gov.in).

Districtwise,  Malappuram recorded highest number of new admissions(20.73%) while Pathanamthitta fared at lowest of 2.21%. Except for districts of Kottayam and Ernakulam, admission numbers are low this year for all the rest compared to last year.

However if new admission numbers be taken only for the government and aided sector, all districts except Palakkad recorded  rise. On other statistics, 56%(20,96,846) of the total children for this academic year are above poverty line and 44%(16,49,801) are below poverty line.
