Thiruvananthapuram : The 50-hour long operation to rescue Maharajan - the labourer trapped inside well from mudslide in Venganoor, and rescuers retrieved his lifeless body from the well’s cavity early this morning. The rescue operation had started at 10 am Saturday and ran into late hours of Sunday night.
The well was 90 feet deep. The well accident took place a 9:15 am Saturday when Maharajan was plastering new concrete r over old ring casings of the well at Mukola native Sukumaran’s house on Sarvashaktipuram road.
Around 15 ft of soil and freshly layers concrete rings buried Maharajan under. 16 concrete casings were removed. When found, Maharajan lay on with hand sticking out. The deceased(55) was a native of Parvathipuram in Tamil Nadu and lived in Venganoor, Nellirathala.
Firefighters reached the spot immediately. However the operation was daunting with more layers of mud falling over as soil layers were being shoved out. Since flow from the spring was intense, two pumps were used to drain water out.
The rescue operation was led by Deputy Collector Jayamohan, Regional Fire Officer Abdul Rasheed, District Fire Officer Suraj, Station Officers TK Ajay, T Ramamurthy, Vizhinjam SHO Prajeesh Shashi, SI Sampath and others.
