9 Dead After Jeep Carrying Plantation Workers In Wayanad Plunges Into Gorge

Mananthwadi : A jeep plunged into deep gorge in Wayanad’s Valad Kannothmala near Mananthwadi killing 9 plantation workers on Friday. Five of who survived are injured and remain hospitalised. All casualties were women workers. The accident took place at 3:3 time when they were returning after work from Thalappuzha Makimala and Kappatmala plantations.

The deceased were identified as Rani(57) from Valiyaparam in Kappattumala, Shantha(45) from No. 6 Colony in Makimla, Chinnama(52) from Makimala Iria Bhavan, Leela (60) ffrom Makimala Panchami, Shaja(42) from Panchami House in Makimala, Rabia(62) of Kapungal,Karthyani(65) from Thekkekunnu, Shobhana(55) of Pookot and Chitra(55) o No. Padi.

All bodies are stored at mortuary of  Govt Medical College in Mananthawadi. Ministers AK Saseendran and Ahmed Devarkov reached the hospital and coordinated the post accident efforts.

One of the injured was transported to Kozhikode Medical College. Condition of three  among the other four is critical.

The jeep veered out of control and rolled down the gorge, landing landed in a rocky stream. All occupants got thrown out of the jeep. Three died on the spot and other six on way to the hospital.

Locals and Thalapuzha police conducted the rescues. The bodies will be handed over to families after postmortem Saturday morning.
