New Delhi : Coal shortage is hitting power generation hard and in scramble to keep supplies somewhat stable, the Railways canceled some of its passenger trains to make way for coal wagons to head through.
Summer sees the year’s highest demand for coal – the season when 70 percent of the country’s electricity is produced. Depleted stocks have however resulted in supply disruptions causing long hours of blackouts in different parts of the country. The coal crisis is unprecedented and threatening revival of the economy battered in the pandemic.
Delhi, Punjab and UP are worst-hit by the crisis. The Delhi government has warned power disruptions to important establishments including Metro trains and hospitals.
National Thermal Power Corporation(NTPC)’s Dadri-II Jhajjar(Aravali) were set up to primarily meet power requirements in capital. However there is very little stock of coal left, the govt said in a statement.
