Thiruvananthapuram : The cabinet meeting today decided to appoint Anil Kant IPS as the new DGP. He is presently Road Traffic Commissioner. A Delhi native, Anil Kant is 1988 IAS batch cadre who entered police service as Kalpetta ASP.
Anil Kant’s appointment comes as state police chief Loknath Behera iretires today. He was selected from a panel of 3 candidates shortlisted by UPSC against 12 names recommended by the state government.
Featuring in the list of three were also: Vigilance Director K Sudesh Kumar and Fire Force Chief B Sandhya. It is the first time that Kerala picked its DGP from the UPSC shortlist.
Beginning with Wayanad as Kalpetta ASP, Anil Kant’s service record include posts as Rural ASP at Thiruvananthapuram, Railway ASP, Assistant Director at Intelligence Bureau in New Delhi and Shillong. Following this, Anil Kant took charge as Kochi City Commissioner and SP in Malappuram, Ernakulam and Crime Branch.
Later, he served as DIG to Crime Branch and Thiruvananthapuram Range IG before becoming State Crime Branch and Special Branch IG. Anil Kant also held post as Excise Commissioner. On elation as ADGP, he served at Kerala Police force as Managing Director of Housing Construction Corporation. Anil Kant has also been ADGP at State Crime Branch and Director General of Airports. He was also ADGP at General Battalion, police Headquarters and South Zone Crime Branch. Before becoming Traffic Commissioner – the last post before current elation, he served as Prison Chief and Head of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau.
Anil Kant is recipient of President’s medal for distinguished service and was also conferred with 2018 Commendation and Badge of Honour for organizing the 64th All India Police Games.
