MEW DELHI : An avalanche struck army positions in northern Siachen Glacier on Monday, killing four soldiers and two porters who were on patrol there.
The soldiers were part of a 8-member group and were patrolling the stretch, when they got trapped under lthe falling snow. They died due to extreme hypothermia, defence officials said.
The accident took place around 3 pm yesterday.
The army launched a massive search and rescue operation to bring back the trapped soldiers. The two surviving soldiers pulled out of the debris are reportedly critical. The soldiers were flown by waiting helicopters to the nearest military hospital.
The Siachen Glacier is at the height of around 20,000 ft in the Karakoram range and is the highest militarized zone in the world.
Avalanches and landslides are common during winters when temperatures drop down to as low as minus 60 degree Celsius.
