Thiruvananthapuram : A BJP councilor’s attempt to elicit communal leverage from lies fell flat on Wednesday, after Mayor Arya Rajendran asked to submit the document in proof of the claim. The drama played out at Council meeting held at Corporation office in the capital.
At the meeting, holding a paper raised in the air, BJP councilor R Gopan said the Corporation issued notice to demolish Sree Narayana Guru Mandiram in Chenghi. The mayor asked to submit the notice in question to see the matter.
At this, Gopan became evasive and said the meeting time was up. However, the mayor insisted that the notice be submitted. Gopan, who still would not hand the paper over, send a picture of it on WhatsApp. The mayor read through content and told the members it was about a standing dispute two groups at Chenthi and the notice was merely issued to the opponent group asking for an explanation.
With cat out of the bag, the BJP councilor was instantly grounded. Enraged, LDF Councilors demanded that he apologise for the false accusation. The latter however did not comply and chose to stay mum. Mayor Arya left the matter at that saying no disciplinary action is being invoked.
Interestingly, the special meeting was called on demand from BJP, for what’s now apparent, was to eke out a political leverage hinged on communal angle.
