Deal Over Citizenship Too; Will Implement CAA Says UDF; Pact Apparent For Switching Votes

Special CorrespondentUpdated: Wednesday Mar 31, 2021

Thiruvananthapuram : UDF  sealed its pact with BJP for effecting citizenship law in state. The secret deal  revolves around UDF's assurance to  BJP that it  will not object to  Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA), if it came to power in state,   In the secret pact, UDF and  Muslim League have agreed to BJP’s suggestion for CAA implementation, in exchange for which, BJP would flip its votes to UDF in a dozen constituencies including Thalassery and Guruvayur.

Should the centre get strict with implementing CAA, UDF will not oppose the move - that’s the secret pact owing  to which BJP did not go for an appeal for its rejected candidates in Guruvayur,  Devikulam and Thalassery. Interestingly, BJP and UDF have not criticised one another’s election manifesto so far. Rahul Gandhi, AK Antony, Oomen Chandy, PK Kunjalikutty and the rest have not referred to CAA up to now. Also conspicuous is that Rahul Gandhi did not criticise BJP during his campaign meetings in Kerala.

Amit Shah’s statement that CAA will come into force here if govt changes,  together with Guruvayur’s League candidate’s proclamation that they will fill NRC forms are proofs of the covert pact.  “Since they are bent on implementing the law, let us be careful and keep our records ready,”  League’s Guruvayur candidate KNA Khadar had said. And, neither Congress or BJP leaders have dismissed Khadar’s statement.

BJP will switch its votes to UDF in Guruvayur and  Thalassery in exchange of which, Nemom model will be worked out in other constituencies. BJP candidate BJP candidate Suresh Gopi earlier said UDF will win in Guruvayur and  that  AN Shamseer should be defeated.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan unequivocally declared that CAA would not be implemented in Kerala. Amit Shah countered that with ambiguity of threat saying, “We will see about it after elections.”. -  a threat that  political observers view as stemming from underlying pacts.
