Thiruvananthapuram : The state’s co-operative department brought sunshine into lives of hundreds plunged in the darkness left by devastating floods of 2018. Two thousand families will now get their new home in place of the one destroyed by century’s worst floods two years ago. Thiruvananthapuram native from Kumarapuram’s Padinjattil lane is the 2000th recipient of the house readied by co-operative department under its Care Home project.
Following instructions from CM to help flood victims, the co-operative societies across the state joined hands to create Care Home. Construction of 2092 houses commenced under the project of which, 1999 had been completed and handed over to beneficiaries. Today on International Co-operative Day, another house was given away , marking the 2000th of such homes completed so far.
All houses have complied to the guideline that they measure a minimum 500 sq ft. Incidentally, the house donated today at Kumarapuram is spaced more. Though it was initially estimated to spend Rs 5 lakh per house, actual costs ranged to between 6 - 7 lakhs. There are certain houses costs of which climbed up to Rs 10 lakh. Nevertheless, all houses were completed in their slated timelines and with beautiful finish.
Also, all newly built houses have been structured to withstand natural calamities. Their foundations and features are constructed to endure challenges of the topography they are located on. Each house comes with basic amenities like well/drinking water, electricity, waste disposal, toilet, clean surroundings, a kitchen garden and so forth.
Care Home originally aimed to provide an abode for each of the 1500 families who had lost their home completely to the floods. However, one year into the project Care Home handover 1700 fully completed homes to the victim beneficiaries.
Care Home continues to receive selfless support from employees in the co-operative sector, its associates and general public, helping towards its success in a big way. Care Home is one among the biggest of Cooperative Sector projects. And, the on-schedule completion of its construction works positions the state’s Cooperative Sector on the frontlines of Rebuilding Kerala project.
Maximum number of homes under the project were built in Thrissur - 497 houses.
