Censorship and Art Can Never Co-exist: Raed Andoni

Thiruvananthapuram > Censorship of any sort from any authority on art, kills the creative expression of the artist, says award-winning Palestinian filmmaker and producer Raed Andoni.  The acclaimed film maker is a member of the Jury for the ‘Non-Fiction’ category.

Conversing with the Official Media Cell of the 11th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK), Andoni said: “A movie reflects a human, and filmmaking is so subjective that it is about how you express yourself and your perspective. There is a magic in cinema that makes it special, you feel something beyond what you see and hear; you become a part of it. It keeps the audience imagining, they build their own narratives and perspectives”.

Pointing out that filmmaking is about the freedom of expression of one’s creativity and it should never be limited, Andoni added: “Don’t put the artists inside a box. You can’t be creative trapped in a box; it is all about the imagination. Artists nurture their art and they have a responsibility towards the audience. Censorship and art can’t co-exist.”

On being part of the fest, Raed expressed his excitement in getting to see the films, as he felt that it is a great experience to understand what the people in the country feel about themselves.

To the aspiring filmmakers, he said, “Let it go. Trust your story, trust your character. Let the story develop itself. Let the character discover on itself, just help it on the way. Let it go.”
