Ambalapuzha: DYFI volunteers act in nick of time saving a Covid patient’s life in Ambalapuzha. The incident took place 9am this morning at Cooperative Engineering College hostel in Punnaprayi’s west panchayat that has been converted into Domestic Care Centre for covid patients.
The facility houses 90 patients. Dressed in PPE Kits, the DYFI volunteers Ahin Kunjumon and Rekha P Mol arrived as usual at 8 am to serve breakfast to the inmates when one of them spoke of a youth struggling to breathe on the 3rd floor of the building. The volunteers sped upstairs on foot and found the young man gasping for breath and eyes bulging. The duo quickly summoned an ambulance but it would take the ambulance at least 10 minutes to reach the spot.
Desperately seeking medical attention for the youth, they boarded him onto Ashin’s bike to a co-operative hospital just 50 meters away. There, he was administered emergency aid and , attached with oxygen tube, he was carried into the waiting ambulance and safely transported to General Hospital. His condition has markedly improved since.
The Domestic Covid Care Centre is a panchayat initiative set up on 30 April for those testing positive but bear no symptoms and also for covid positive persons who lack attached-bathroom facility in their homes. The panchayat’s care centre provides free food and accommodation to covid patients.
