New Delhi : 19 percent of total deaths in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are those of children aged between 4 – 9. The report, based on countrywide data from 2011 up to 2019, is a grim indicator of child deaths on widescale in these states. Child deaths figure lowest in Kerala. While one out of every five deaths in Madhya Pradesh pertain to a child, in U. P. that ratio is one out every six. In Kerala the number is just one out sixty. The national average is one in nine.
In Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh children below 4 years account for 9.1 and 8.2 percent of total deaths respectively. More children succumb to death in these sates than the elderly citizens above 80.In Madhya Pradesh child deaths account for 18.9 percent while fatalities among those in their sixties figure at 17.8 percent and deaths among people in eighties is 15.1 percent.
In Uttar Pradesh, 18 percent of deaths occur among children, 78.2 percent among people in sixties and 15.4 percent of those in eighties.
Death among children aged less than 1 year is also the lowest in Kerala. The report says Bihar and Assam have been able to bring down their infant mortality numbers to 17.14 percent.
