Thiruvananthapuram : The age limit for children lodged with their mothers at state’s Mahila Mandirams, has been raised to 10 in place of previous 6. The move is based on the premise that proximity to mothers is essential for wellbeing during a child’s growing years, said Minister for Social Justice, KK Shailaja. Earlier, the 13th Kerala Assembly Committee in its report had recommended revisal for children’s age to 10.
There are 12 Mahila Mandirams functioning under Department For Women and Children. Those admitted into these Homes include widows, divorcees, poor and needy women and girls aged above 13 who have no one to care for them.
