Kochi: The NIA court on Monday, refused bail to Swapna Suresh - one of the prime accused in the sensational gold smuggling case. The rejection came based on probe findings and the case diary submitted by the investigators. The court observed that, there is prima facie evidence linking Swapna’s involvement in the gold smuggling operations. Proof of her attempts to have the contraband released, offers scope for charges under UAPA, the court said.
While considering bail plea earlier, the court had asked NIA how UAPA charges could be sustained. NI subsequently submittd its case diary with findings to satisfy that query. The diary also cited how embezzlement carried out through gold smuggling amounted to terror activities in the case.
Meanwhile, efforts are on to have the main accused Faisal Hareed and Rabeen deported to Kerala for impending arrest and interrogation.
