Thiruvananthapuram : Kerala today unveils a new face in the history of protests, with households across the state transforming into satyagraha venues. This never-before style of protest will also represent the beginning of agitation against handing over the historic landmark and profit making Thiruvananthapuram airport to private parties.
On Sunday, in line with the call from party leadership, more than 25 lakh families will register their opposition to anti-public policies floated by the Centre during lockdown. They will do this with flag, poster and slogans at their residences. Apart from houses numbering lakhs, the protest lasting up to 4.30 pm will also be held in offices of the party and various mass organisations.
The protest will mobilise students, youth, employees, workers, farmers and farm workers into its fold. Party leaders, members and workers at different class and mass organisations will have their families participate in the demonstration. CPI(M) State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will hold protest along with members in his family at their residence in Maruthamkuzhy. Politburo member S Ramchandran Pillai and Central Committee member MV Govindan will stage their protest at AKG centre.
The protest demands that Rs 7500 be paid to bank accounts of all families from the non-tax paying bracket for the next six months, along with 10 kg foodgrain per month in that period. Further, the protests also demands an increase of man-days under Employment Guarantee Scheme from the present 200 days of labour. And, at the heart of the satyagraha lies vehement opposition to privatisation of government establishments - a spree by the centre that is steadily gobbling up public sector units despite much among them earning profit for the government.
