Amaravati : Close on heels of flash floods in Andhra Pradesh that killed over 40, cracks have been reported in the reservoir of the state’s biggest and oldest dam, Rayala Cheruvu near Tirupati. Cracks appeared in two bunds of the reservoir at Ramachandrapuram with water reportedly leaking out the gaps triggering massive evacuation of residents downsteam ordered by Vellore Colelctor, Hari Narayan. .
The reservoir currently holds 0.9 TMC feet, a volume the dam is not capacitated for, informed the distarict administration.
Ramachandrapuram, that lies adjacent to the temple town of Tirupati is experiencing heavy rainfall since 4 days. Several people, including devotees to Tirupati from Kerala, have become stranded in the region. More than 2 lakh cusects water flooded out of Somasila reservoir in SPS Nellore causing deluge that has so far killed 41 in the district.
