THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : Hundreds of DYFI workers turned up to donate blood as Trivandrum Medical College reeled under acute shortage of blood for its hospital patients. Owing to fears of coronavirus infection, low donor participation has harmed blood availability at hospitals across the State. Incidentally, the DYFI blood drive is part of CPI(M)’s Jevadhaara policy.
DYFI State Secretary A Arif, State Committee member Sureshbabu, District President V Vineet, Secretary KP Pramosh and Treasurer V Anoop were among those who volunteered blood early morning Saturday. The donation drive will gather momentum with each Block Committee getting their workers and volunteers in the area, to donate blood at hospitals there.
Ever since Covid cases were confirmed in the State, people are reluctant to visit hospitals or blood donation centres from fears of getting exposed to the virus. The situation is common to all hospitals where covid patients are known to have been admitted, resulting in unprecedented shortage of live-saving blood supplies throughout the State..
In view of the crisis worsening, DYFI workers under the aegis of their respective District Committees will donate blood to major hospitals across the State. DYFI is committed to ensuring that all blood banks have adequate supplies, said DYFI Secretary A Arif.
Following Covid-19 fears, DYFI had suspended blood-donation camps organized outside. School and college going students had failed to show up at these drives, resulting in supplies at blood bank dwindling. The situation worried hospitals across the State about what would happen to the scores of emergency surgeries that require stable blood reserves. In fact several surgeries have been put off for want of blood. It is against this backdrop that DYFI stepped in to resolve the situation.
