Thiruvananthauram : In a first in State, Thankam Hospital in Palakkad will face action under Clinical Establishment law. The unprecedented action was announced by Health Minister Veena George on Wednesday.
The Minister directed the District Registering Authority and DMO Vice Chairman to conduct in-depth probe and submit detailed report on the incident. The action comes over complaint of frequent deaths at the hospital from medical negligence.
Context : Thankam Hospital came into focus a few days back, after a 25-year-old woman, Aiswarya, died hours after her newborn was declared stillborn. The infant’s body was buried by the hospital staff and later exhumed whereupon, the postmortem put the cause of death as suffocation from umbilical cord tangling around the baby’s neck. The child was reportedly delivered using suction method. Relatives allege Aiswarya’s uterus was also removed in the process without knowledge of relatives.
