Thiruvananthapuram : Health Minister Veena George ordered an in-depth probe into the organ transplant incident at Medical College where the patient died allegedly from delay surgery. The Additional Director has been entrusted with conduct of the probe. Speaking with media, the minister said all medical colleges have been issued exact guideline for their method of function. Those in responsible position must act in responsible manner, failing which, the government would have to take up action. What kind of trend is this to be saying we will be protest ? It’s not possible to go forward with disregard for human life, the Minister said.
Sent on suspension are : the heads of nephrology and urology departments. The suspension came over preliminary report submitted by Additional Secretary. Action in the case shall be decided once the postmortem report indicates the exact cause of death. Probe will also look to find if lapse in coordination was a causative factor, the Minister said.
The Minister directed Additional Secretary for urgent report based. There will be strict action against the guilty, the Minister said. The minister called an emergency high-level meeting on Monday, the very day the incident occurred.
The story so far : Following information that kidney was available at Rajagiri hospital in Ernakulam, doctors from nephrology and urology departments set out for Kochi. They had contacted the Home Department for transport arrangements in response to which, the police readied Green Panel. The ambulance took off from Ernakulam at afternoon 2.30 pm and reached Super Specialty at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College by 5.30 pm. However, confusion ensued after a handful of non-hospital staff carried away the box with kidney into the hospital. These persons reportedly did not know where exactly the operation theatre was. The hospital submitted a complaint in the incident and probe is underway,
It was around 2.30 pm that available kidney was deterenimed to be a match for Karakonam native, Suresh Kumar. He was under expert medical observation way before the kidney was on its way.Suresh was admitted for dialysis at 4.30 pm in preparation for the surgery and was done with by night. The surgery began 8.30 pm and lasted 8 hours ending at dawn.
The surgery costing lakhs in private hospitals is being done free at the govt hospital and is conducted by a specially trained team of experts. Potential intervention from private sector will also be investigated. Lapses of the kind that just happened shall not be allowed, the minister said.
