Kollam : The Prosecution in Dr. VAndana Das murder submitted its proposed timeline for hearing of the case – one that schedules for the trial to commence in 1st week of September. The ruling from Kollam Additional Sessions Judge PN Vinod is expected to come during the day, 24 July, Thursday. Special Prosecutor Prathap G Patikal appeared for the state.
The Tragic Murder: On 10 May, 2023, Vandana Das, a medico interning at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital, was attacked and stabbed by a drunk assailant who was brought in by police for medical examination at the hospital. The stab wounds later culminated in her death the same day.
The accused was an upper primary school teacher , Sandeep(42), who dialled 112 himself for police help under the influence of alcohol. When found by Police, Sandeep had minor injuries and was fetched to the hospital, where soon up on reaching, he started to attack those around him including the police. Staff at the hospital fled and hid themselves, however Vandana startled by what was occurring stood fixed at the spot and fell victim to the stabs from scissors that Sandeep had grabbed from the dressing room.
The incident sparked wide outrage among the healthcare community that called for stringent punishment for attacking medical and healthcare staff. Sandeep is currently awaiting trial at Addl Sessions Court(I) in Kollam.
