NEW DELHI : Eight  MPs including CPI(M) parliamentarians from Kerala- Elamaram Kareek and KK Ragesh - were suspended by Rajya Sabha for raising protest against the government’s anti-farmer bills in the House on Sunday. The suspension is effective for one week and was handed on accusation of causing insult to the Chair.

Other MPs under suspension were : Derik O’Brown, Sanjay Singh, Raju Sathav, Ripun Bora, Dolsen, Saiyid Nafeezh and Hussain.

Rajya Sabha proceedings have been put on hold currently, owing to overwhelming protest from Opposition parties. Two out of the three contentious farm bills were passed in the House yesterday. The bills were cleared by voice vote though much among the members asked for physical voting.

The two bills passed were : Farmers’ Produce Trade, and Consumers’ Bill 2020 and Farmers Agreement On Price Assurance & Farm Service Bill.

Given the overwhelming opposition and chaos at Rajya Sabha, passing the third namely,  Essential Commodities(Amendment) Bill was rendered impossible. Post the passage of the other two bills, irked MPs tore up papers and strew them around.
