Colombo: Maldivian film actress Fauziyya Hassan, let off without charges in the ISRO espionage case, has passed away following heart attack. The end came at her residence in Sri Lanka. She was 80.
Fauziyya was arrested in 1994 and remained jailed for 3 years along with co-accused Mariam Rasheeda, the first accused in the case. The women were let off in 1997. Years later, the Special Investigation Team(SIT) constituted to probe the case would tell the court that the two Maldivian woman and scientist Nambi Narayanan were falsely implicated in the case. Charges against all were annuled.
Born in 1942, Fauzziya who was fascinated with cinema from childhood took to acting career in 1985 featuring in a number of movies, some of which fetched her popular regional awards.
