Thiruvananthapuram : Punishment for sexual crime against minors is coming of age. The Principal POCSO Court Thiruvananthapuram today convicted a step father with five life sentences for rape and impregnation of 13-year-old. In effect, the man will remain behind bars for rest of his life if the sentencing remains intact. The verdict was pronounced by Justice MP Shibu, who also ordered payment of Rs 2.5 lakhs in fine that would be payable to the victim.
The incident took place in 2021. The crime came to light when the girl’s mother took her to the hospital following fever and vomiting. Pallikal CI conducted investigations and arrested the accused.
With stiff opposition put up by the prosecution, the court refused to grant bail and the accused stayed locked up all through the trial proceedings that were completed in an year’s time.
The court has also ruled for State Government to pay solatium to the victim. The prosecution heard testimonies from 20 witnesses and examined 35 documents in the case.
Public prosecutor Kattaikonam JK Ajitprasad and advocates Hashmi, Bindu and Revathi appeared for the prosecution.
