Life from 'Layams'; Kerala Introduces new Housing Scheme

Thiruvananthapuram > A housing scheme for the plantation workers that will help them to move from 'Layams’(plantation lodgings) to proper houses. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that in the first phase, 100 houses will be built at Devikulam in Idukki district. The houses are being constructed in the KDH village with the help of Bhavanam Scheme under the Labor Department. Each of these houses of area 400 sq ft area will be built at a cost of ₹4.88 lakhs.

The scheme will be expanded to all plantation areas in the State. Many organisations are also helping the Government in this endeavour. The scheme is part of the Government’s package to resolve the crisis in plantation sector. Efforts for increasing plantation workers’ wages are in progress. The Labour department also took special measures to secure the lives of plantation workers during the time of floods and during the crisis of demonetization.
