Thiruvananthapuram : The weather department has forecast heavy rains exceeding 20 cm for Kerala over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday., triggered by cyclonic storm at Bay of Bengal that's coursing westward. Orange Alert has been issued for 7 districts - from Thiruvananthapuram up to Ernakulam and it’s yellow for others except for districts of Wayanad and Kasaragod. Eight districts, from Thiruvananthapuram to Thrissur, are on orange alert for Tuesday. Districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta are advised caution as that for red alert.
It’s after a break that rains have turned intense in the state. Much of today’s rains are expected to precipitate in central Kerala and the southern region. In coming days the severity will shift toward north. Tuesday could see rains heavier than witnessed today. Eight districts, from Thiruvananthapuram to Thrissur are predicted to have very heavy downpours.
Two deaths, from being swept up in the rains, were reported in Pathanamthitta and Kollam – a youth, Adveth, died in Ranni’s Kollamulla village after his bike got caught in flowing current while his fellow-rider Samuel escaped miraculously. The second casualty was a Madhura native who died in Kollam’s Kambavuratti.
Landslides were reported in Idukki, Moolamattam, Kottayam and Munnilav. In Munnilav, a person was reported missing. A man, Nizammudin, in Aluva was swept during bath in the river.
High alert has been announced for the state following heavy rains. Monday has been declared holiday for educational institutions in several parts across districts.
