High court Orders Archbishop George Alenchery To Face Trial, Dismisses Plea

Kochi : The High Court on Thursday ruled that Archibishop Mar George Alenchery must face trial on accusations pertaining to the Syro Malabar land deal. George Alenchery had pled with the court seeking to quash 6 cases related to the deal. The verdict was handed by Justice P Somaraj. The District Sessions Court had earlier ordered identical direction.

Context: As per the case before court, the church suffered massive losses in the sale of land adjacent to Bharat Matha College in Kochi. Perumbavur native Joshi Varghese filed petition. Those who must face trial in the case include Mar George Alenchery, former finance manager of the archdiocese Fr. Joshi Puthuva and the real estate middleman Sajju Varghese.
