Palakkad: Jnanpith awardee and legendary poet Akkitham Achuthan Nambudiri passed away Thursday morning. He was 94. The end came at a hospital in his home district of Palakkad, where the poet was being treated for age-relate complications since a while.
Akkitham received Jnanpith award, country’s highest literary award, on 24th September. Widely known as Akkitham, the poet contributed numerous poems contoured in Indian philosophy and traditional values. His famous works includes Irapatham Noottantine Ithihasam, Balidevashanam and Dharma Sorayam.
Akkitham was born on 18 March, 1926 in Palakkad’s Kumaraneloor. He was son of Vasudevan Namboothiri of Amettoor Mana and Parvathy Antharjanam of Chekoor Mana. He got married aged 23 in 1949 to Sreedevi Antharjanam of Almbili Mana in Pattambi. Their children are : Parvathy, Indira, Vasudevan , Shreeja,Leela and Narayanan. Renowned painter and sculptor Akkitham Narayanan is the departed poet’s brother.
The funeral today will be held with full state honours at 5 pm today at home premises in Kumaranaloor.
