KOCHI : The Congress party’s trade union wing, Indian National Trade Union Contress(INTUC) looks all set for its next split. Protesting the anti-labour attitude of INTUC’s current State leadership, a group of members set up a committee of their own. The new entity titled Coordination Committee reportedly draws members from various unions affiliated to INTUC.
The present State Committee helmed by R Chandrashekaran is insensitive to issues and its leaders are motivated by vested interests, said office bearers of the new committee. Around 600 unions stand by us, they claimed. ‘Protect Labourers, Protect INTUC’ is our slogan, said the Coordination Committee convener KP Haridas.
The current leadership seeks to maintain grasp on the organisation by holding sloppy elections, he said. During Oomen Chandy’s tenure, INTUC teamed up with BSM to hold strikes ;, Following CBI probe, the leaders are frightened and hiding in their holes, Haridas mocked.
The State President acts in an authoritarian style, in total defiance of INTUC’s national leadership. For selfish gains, he has clipped the wings of various State Committees. Complaints in this regard has forwarded to the All-India President. The formation of Coordination Committee is a continuity of that grievance , he said.
We shall continue to protest against anti-labour laws of the State and Centre and shall hold a march to Secretariat on 22 Feb. Oomen Chandy Will inaugurate the march. At that time, workers would make out which INTUC is real and who they ought to be standing with, the new leaders said.
The press meet was held in the capital by Coordination Committee chairman K Suresh Babu, Convener P J Joy. Sherif Marakar and Thoas Kalladan also attended the event.
