Anchal : In continued Congress violence, union workers affiliated to  INTUC in Kollam attempted to hack CITU workers to death. The incident took place at RPL Estate in Ayiraneloor .

A gang of INTUC workers  attacked  the CITU workers - Kumar and Vijayan - who worked in the  plantation’s  block-8 . Kumar’s hand was hacked to the extent where it nearly ripped off the body. Both men were rushed to Punalur taluk hospital from where, Kumar was later shifted to Trivandrum Medical College.

Disenchanted by anti-worker policies of INTUC, around 10 families, including those of Kumar and Vijayan -  exited the union to join CITU and  the present attack was in revenge for that shift. The assailants  used swords and crowbars in the attack that was by led by RPL Estate Union  General Secretary Danymon and Yesudas. “We have been harassed and threatened from day one of leaving INTUC and live shut-in from  constant fear, without being able to even open our doors, said Kumar’s wife Vanita at the hospital.

The RPL Estate attack is  part of the violent series Congress has planned to perpetrate in the state, said CITU District Secretary, S Jayamohan. The Plantation Workers’ Union(CITU) will stage  strong protests tomorrow in the estate region over the violence.

The Plantation Union Regional Secretary T Ajayan, CPI(M) Punalur Area Secretary. S Biju and Anchal Area Secretary, D Viswasanan visited hospitals and met with the victims.
