Kalluvathikal Hooch Tragedy ; Supreme Court Orders For Release of Mannichan, Exempts Fine

New Delhi  : The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered for release of Manchan, the prime accused in Kalluvathikal hooch tragedy that killed 31 in October of 2000.

The apex court asserted there cannot be detention on account of failure to pay fine. Mannichan is currently in jail serving life imprisonment in the case. Though, he secured relief in jail time, the govt in its affidavit to Supreme Court had sought added nine months if he did not pay the fine of Rs 30 lakh included in his conviction. The fine sum was meant for paying solatium to the families of the dead, the govt had said.
