NEW DELHI : The Kerala Government on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that over 1.61 guest workers have expressed wish to remain in the state rather than return to their native places.
Special train services were arranged for the 1.2 lakh among them who demanded to return to their states. A total of 1.53 lakh guest workers have headed back to Kerala in 112 trains. The report was prompted by Centre who asked Kerala to detail the court on measures taken so far for the wellbeing of its guest workers.
Not a single guest worker went hungry without food since lockdown, Kerala told the court.. Around 4,34,280 among have been rendered jobless following the pandemic. There are 21,556 camps currently around the state housing the guest workers, where basics like food, water and other amenities including television have been provided for. Also, the state implemented a medical insurance scheme for its guest workers, said Kerala in its report.
