High winds and heavy rainfall are forecast to hit the coasts, as super cyclonic storm Kayrr heads for Kerala.
Orange alert, implying authorities to stand ready, has been issued in Kollam district for Tuesday and in Idukki for Wednesday.
Heavy rainfall ranging up to 204.4mm has been predicted in the two districts.
The storm is predicted to grow severe on Tuesday, while Yellow alert has issued for Monday in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki and, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Idukki on Tuesday.
Thrissur and Palakkad have been handed out yellow alerts for Wednesday.
Kyarr which has evolved into a super cyclonic storm on Monday will heighten in intensity on Tuesday. The storm has been predicted to lose its strength after Tuesday and transform into a 'very severe cyclonic storm' on Wednesday. By Thursday, it will shed some more severity and become a 'severe cyclonic storm'.
Meanwhile IMD and Kerala State Disaster Management Authority have issued strict warnings to fishermen prohibiting them from venturing into the sea until Friday
High swell waves in the range of 2.5 - 2.9 meters are predicted till Tuesday midnight beyond 10 km off the coast of Kerala, IMD said.
Kayrr is the super cyclonic storming Arabian Sea since Cyclone Gonu devastated Oman’s coast in 2007.
