On 30 January a student, from Thrissur tested positive for the virus up on her return from China’s Wuhan, marking the first case of coronavirus for the country itself. Tracing, testing, quarantine and treatment measures were held in place to ensure there occurred no spread in the disease's first phase.

The second wave struck in first week of March. Capacities were ramped up and it became possible to flatten the curve by the end of two months since, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Kerala’s recovery rate is among some of  the world’s very best. Now at this juncture, we prepare to receive returnees from outside states and abroad. All arrangements are in place. Efforts are focused on preventing another wave from happening. And yet if it does, the health system is fully prepared to handle cases with the kind of success accomplished up to now, the minister said..

The situation presently is one that of relief.  However, the coming days would be decisive. We have stay on higher vigil. Time has come, to scale up support extended by the public so far to  contain the virus,  said CM.
