Kochi: The High Court on Thursday blocked a revised stamp duty crafted by Lakshadweep administration for land transactions there.
The new government order levying 6 percent tax on land owned by men, 7 percent on land owned by women and 8 percent on lands under other ownerships, is unconstitutional, the court pointed out.
The new tax is also against Indian Stamp Duty Act, said the court, adding that, discriminatory stamp duty cannot be allowed.
The ruling came over petition submitted residents of Amini island and sought response of Lakshadweep administration on the issue.
