Kunnamangalam, PALAKKAD : In the by-elections held Saturday, LDF captured Kunnamangalam Block President chair, held previously by Alathur MP Remya Haridas. Left candidate Sunita was elected to the post marking LDF’s return to power in the Block.
Following UDF boycott, Sunita was selected to the post unanimously, with no other contestant in the fray. Vice-president Sivadasan Nair nominated Sunita for the post, while Rajeev Parumanthura backed the name.
Following Remya Haridas’s resignation in April , UDF candidate Naseeb Rai won the 1st bypoll, retaining the Congress-led governance in the Block. However the vice-prseident Biji Muppraimel tendered resignation as LDF prepared to move the no-confidence motion against the incumbent. Biji called it quits knowing fully well that UDF would be ousted in the vote, given that NJD candidate and vice-president Sivadasan Nair had left UDF camp to stand with LDF. With Sivadasan gone, the tally for UDF slipped to 9 while LDF saw a spike to 10, in the 19-member council.
Kunnamangalam Block, chaired by Remya Haridas ealier, figures lowest in the panchayat rungs, n terms of social welfare activity by political candidates.
