Current crisis : Private hospitals charge lakhs for liver transplant and govt hospitals lack the facility

Liver Transplant Facility Coming At Thiruvananthapuram Medical College

Thiruvananthapuram : Health Minister Veena George on Thursday directed for setting up of  liver transplant surgery facility at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College. The instruction was issued at a high-level meeting the minister chaired during the day.

The govt decision comes over crisis encountered by needy patients with private hospitals charging several lakhs for  liver transplant and govt hospitals lacking  facility to perform the surgery.

According to the instruction handed today : all works toward the new transplant facility shall be completed in timely manner; an exclusive surgery unit shall be set up for liver transplant; immediate steps shall be taken to commence the liver transplant surgery at T’Puram Medical College

The Health Dept lend huge backing to herald liver transplant surgery at Kottayam Medical College which recently completed Kerala’s first govt hospital transplant successfully in a Thrissur native.

Attendees in today’s meeting comprised : Additional Health Secretary Dr. Asha Thomas, Medical Education Director A Ramla Beevi, Joint Director Thomas Mathew, Medical College Principal Sara Varghese, Head Gastroenterology Dept Krishadas, Surgical Gastor Dept Chief Ramesh Rajan and Head of Anesthesia Dept Linett.
