Mumbai : Government in Maharashtra curbs governor’s role in appointing university Vice Chancellors. The decision came about at a meeting of the Congress-BJP State Cabinet held Wednesday.
Up until now, the Governor – also the chancellor of all universities in the state – appoints Vice Chancellor by choosing one among five names recommended by the Search Committee. That will now change with amendments proposed to the Maharashtra Public University Act 2016. The amendment will bring Search Committee directly under the government which will shortlist two names from Search Committee recommendations and send them to the Governor. The Maha government via its amendment has also created a post of pro-chancellor for Higher and Technical Education Minister. And, for selection of pro vice chancellor, the government will shortlist three names and send them to the Governor. The proposal bringing about the amendment will go to the Governor for approval after it’s passed by the state legislature.
The development comes amid unnecessary ruckus thrown up by Congress in Kerala over appointment of Kannur University vice chancellor, even as the party’s coalition government in Maharashtra is racing to downsize Governor’s role in VC appointments.
