Karunagapally :The newly constructed Maliyekkal railway overbridge in Karunagapally will opene for public use today. The State’s first-of-its-kind steel flyover will be inaugurated by Public Works Minister PA Mohamed Riyas at 3 pm, accompanied by ministers KN Balagopal, J Chichurani and others.
With initiative made by former MLA R Ramachandran, the first Pinarayi government sanctioned Rs 33.04 crores in KIIFB funding for the project. The corner stone was laid by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on 23 January 2021.The overbridge, with pavement to one side, runs between Karunagapally and Shastamkotta, and is 546 meters long and 10.2 meters wide. The construction cost totalled to Rs 26.58 crores.
As the flyover opens to public, it marks realisation of a longstanding dream of the Karunagapally residents, said LDF leaders at a press conference. When the inauguration was put off for a few days owing to landslides disaster, the UDF popped up a politically motivated protest demanding instant inaugural, despite the Wayanad situation. Looking to rake up political gain, even if only momentarily, they took to spreading falsified propaganda to mislead the public. Even so, the people at large recognise the developments accomplished for the State by the LDF government, the leaders told reporters.
