Nagpur : : The Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court acquitted former Delhi University professor GN Saibaba in the case relating Maoist links for which he was arrested in 2014.
In their ruling, Justices Rohit Deo and Anil Pansare of the Division Bench overturned life imprisonment clamped on the professor and others by the Gadchiroli Sessions Court in Maharashtra that convicted them under Unlawful Activities(Prevention) Act or UAPA and for abetting Maoist activities and waging war against the country.
The case dates back to 2012. Prof. Saibaba and five others were booked for attending a conference conducted by pro-Maoist organisations. Prof. Saoaba was accused of propagating Maoist perpetration by the way of speech he had delivered and was subsequently charged, tried and convicted.
Saibaba is currently in Nagpur’s Central jail. The Human Rights Association urged for the Court for his urgent release citing health issues and paralysis to his both legs from polio.
The court had admitted appeal against conviction from the professor and five others. One of them died in jail during hearing of the verdict.
