Thiruvananthapuram : LDF’s CPI(M) candidate K Sreekumar has been elected the new Mayor of Tthiruvananthapuram.
In the voting held at Council Hall on Tuesday, UDF ‘s Pettah Councilor D Anil Kumar and BJP’s Nemom Councilor M R Gopan were defeated.
With three contestants running for Mayorship, the voting was held in two rounds
UDF candidate Anil Kumar was eliminated in the first round with least number of votes. The second round witnessed contest between BJP’s Gopan and CPI(M) candidate Sreekumar.
The seat was vacant after incumbent VK Prashant left to win Assembly by-polls at Vatiyurkauv.
99 members cast their votes in the first round, of which, Sreekumar bagged 42 votes, followed by M R Gopan with 35 votes and UD F trailing behind with 20 votes.
Votes cast by Congress member C Omana, BJP ‘s Jyothy Satish and independent member N S Lathakumari, turned up invalid.
In the second round, Sreekumar bagged 42 votes beating rival Gopan who secured 34 votes. Sreekumar was then declared the city’s new mayor.
