Tokyo Olympics: India women’s hockey team loses in 3 – 4 to Great Britain and yet doing the country proud and creating history by qualifying for their first Olympic semi-final. It is the first time, the Indian women’s hockey team ever competed for a medal at the Olympics.
In the quarter-final, they took on Rio champions, Australia and put on a valiant performance that they carried through the semi-finals. They had defeated Australia 1 – 0 pm Monday to qualify for the maiden Olympic semi-final.
India once ruled hockey for decades when the sport was still played on a natural field. India has won 11 Olympic medals, including eight golds, in hockey. Women largely ignored in the sport, made their debut in 1980,but has only played three editions, including the present at Tokyo.
