Media Wobbles As Probe Agencies Flip-flop On Gold Smuggling

Special CorrespondentUpdated: Tuesday Nov 17, 2020

Media that gobbled every statement  agencies put forth until now, are currently staggering to find ground as conflicting claims arise from different probe outfits.   And, among them, Manorama and Mathrubhumi have  a particularly hard time trying to clear up their mess .Despite investigations passing four long months, the ED, Customs and NIA's  views on large sums of money found in Swapna’s locker,  hang in different directions. And attempting to cope up with the lapse, Manorama and Mathrubhumi now write that such contradictions are insignificant.

NIA and Customs claim the one crore rupees found in the locker was Swapna’s share for her role in smuggling. By contrast, ED report claims the sum was bribe she received in connection with LIFE Mission project in Vadakanchery.

Amid this, Manorama in its news ponders if Sivasankar has any link at all  to the racketeering,  even as, the newspaper raises a  question : who does that money really belong to ? It then answers that anxiety saying, Customs should solve that mystery.

Manorma’s ponderings continue - If M Sivasankar is the alleged mastermind behind gold smuggling, how come there was no money found on him?; How did  gold smuggling come to be linked to state’s housing project? For respite,  the newspaper pins all hopes on Customs saying, let them find answers to all these.

Interestingly, the ED report submitted to court contains claims neither NIA or Customs ever found  during the course of their investigations. Now as arguments are set to heat up, the agencies are undermining the so-called findings of one another.
