New Delhi : The Supreme Court is scheduled to spell its verdict on the batch of petitions questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial demonetisation of 2016. The verdict will be pronounced by five-judge Constitution Bench comprising Justices Abdul Nazir, BR Gawai, AS Bopanna, V Ramasubramanian and BV Nagaratrna. The judgment has been penned by Justice BR Gavai.
The verdict, according to sources, is an unanimous one and comes on the last working day for Justice Nazir who is slated to retire tomorrow Tuesday.
The case hearing ended on 7 December and saw arguments from prominent lawyers like P Chidambaram, Prashanth Bhushan and Shyam Devan who appeared for the petitioners.
During the case proceedings, the Bench had directed the Central government and Reserve Bank of India to submit documents relating to demonization.
The court was initially of the view that given 6 years of passage since demonetisation, the case would be purely of academic interest in nature. However, the court later observed that it will examine the sequences to learn what led to taking of such a decision.
K Chidambaram also argued that standards must be set for such action, so there is no mistake of this kind repeated in future.
