Kottayam : The Kottayam additional district sessions court on Friday granted Franco Mulakkal - the prime accused in nun rape case - bail attached with strict conditions.
The terms of bail prohibit Mulakkal from leaving Kerala until the chargesheet has been read on 13th of August. It further requires him to report to court on all dates slated for attendance. Also, the new sureties have to furnish fresh bond with the court.
Special prosecutor Jitesh Babu appeared on behalf of the prosecution while the defense was presented by Advocates CS Ajayan and Sudeesh Kumar.
Mulakkal was already out on bail which got cancelled when he failed to make court appearance in person. He pleaded for pardon on grounds of being quarantined after testing positive for the coronavirus. He was not arrested or remanded after that.
Incidentally, the Supreme Court had recently rejected Mulakkal’s plea seeking to be relieved of charges against him. Mulakkal was arrested in 2019 following allegations by a nun at Kuravilangd convent in Kottayam that, the bishop had raped and sexually assaulted her on several occasions between 2014 - 2016, a charge he denies.
