Kochi: : Election ties with Welfare party during local body polls turned proved to be of significant setback to UDF, said Mullappally Ramachandran. Ties with the Welfare and communal parties should be avoided  at least for coming Assembly elections, the KPCC president said  in an interview with Malayala Manorama.

Responding to the question if MM Hassan’s talks with Jamaat-e-Islami was damaging, Mullappally said, “With election on hand, it is risky to go berserk. A large section of the Muslim community turned against UDF when it formed alliance with Welfare party. There is the  Congress’s Political Affairs Committee decision forbidding ties with such parties.”

Several sections that traditionally supported Congress distanced themselves. When there occurs an election defeat, political reasons should be scrutinised. Getting hold of some leader instead, and roasting him in public and social media is not a healthy approach. Such demeanor has hurt me much. I am someone who works all 24 hours for the party. I four times travelled through the lengths and breadths of the state during election. I don’t think any other leader undertook such exercise, said Mullappally on TV.
