Thiruvananthapuram : Covid deaths getting underreported has no basis at all, said Health Minister Veena George on Wednesday.  Based on guidance issued by World Health Organisation(WHO),  virus deaths are reported directly by the Medical Board, said Veena George in reply to Opposition’s  adjournment motion on the topic.

“One person might be struck down in a vehicle accident and owing to conditions now, might turn out positive for the virus. But, if he succumbs to the injuries, his  demise  cannot be ruled as a covid-death”, the minister explained.

Vaccine-distribution in the state is being carried out in scientific manner. Kerala raced to upscale its medical capacities even before the second wave set in. The attempt here is  to  downgrade state's covid mitigation efforts; Is this the kind backing for Covid mitigation the Opposition talked about?, the minister asked.

Most deaths are occurring between ages 70 – 80. The overall death rate in  2020 has been lesser than 2019. The government took good care of its  people during the Covid period, ensuring that no one went hungry during hard-hit times, the minister said.

Context: Dr. Muneer had sought permission for adjournment motion on the topic, however, following explanation from the minister, the Speaker declined the same. VD Satheeshan pitched in saying the Opposition lends unconditional backing for the government’s Covid mitigation efforts.
