Not ‘Kerala’, It’s ‘Keralam’: Assembly Passes Resolution For Amend To Official Name

Thiruvaanthapuram : The Legislative Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed Resolution to effect change of name to State from “Kerala” to “Keralam”. The Resolution was moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan under Rule 118 requesting the Central government to take immediate for change of name to “Keralam”.

“In Malayalam, our State takes the name “Keralam” . States were reorganised based on language on 1 November 1956. That’s the day Kerala was born. There was strong demand in days since the national freedom movement for a State comprising all  Malayalam -speaking people. However, in the first schedule of Constitution, our State name has been spelt as ‘Kerala’. This Assembly unanimously requests that the Union government, under Article 3 of the Constitution,  take immediate steps amend the State name as “Keralam” .This House also urges that the name also be changed to “Keralam” in all languages listed in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution."
